This batch of clips begins with a trip back to July 27th, 1991, when I went to Asakusa from Ueno to see the big Sumida-gawa Fireworks Festival. After that are typical views of Shinjuku, Ginza, Yurakucho, the Chuo Line, the Ginza Line, etc., *and* a 2011 visit to Kyojima - which I visited back in 1991 as a rare part of Tokyo that escaped the firebombing of WW-II by virtue of being between two rivers. In 1991, there were still a number of old wooden buildings that pre-dated the war, but this time around, not very many. I was also (slightly) surprised to see a monster high-rise right in the middle of the old two story buildings in the area. It may well end up being made into (yet another) exclusive vertical gated community. Vertical gated communities have their place in the city, but one hopes that some of the old way with street-level open-front shops will continue as well....
July 27th, 1991 - Going to Asakusa to see the Sumida-gawa (River) Fireworks Festival (隅田川花火大会). This includes views of Ueno, lining up for tickets, riding the Ginza Line to Asakusa, watching the fireworks in Asakusa, and then taking a few trains from Asakusa over to the Seibu-Ikebukuro Line.
Riding a very noisy elevator in Kyobashi. (I don't think it's dangerous - since they regularly change the motors and cables in elevators - but I think there's a very tired solenoid or something in the elevator box that needs to be replaced.)
This batch of 30-frames-a-second pictures with sound include recent Tokyo views (Shinjuku, Ginza, Yurakucho, etc.) and also a couple of looks back - with an April 1992 look at Melbourne, and an April 1992 look at Sydney (the 3rd from that time frame). Also are typical Tokyo train views - including a train change with jogging in Tokyo Station.
Starting and ending at the airport in Melbourne, Australia, in April 1992, with some city views and countryside views going out to visit a farm. After that a ride on an old narrow gauge steam train, and then back to the city center (street car ride, etc.) and then onto a plane to head back to Sydney.
A few views of Sydney, Australia in April 1992 (C), after coming back from a trip to Melbourne ("Melbourne - April 1992"). (Note: This clip is quite short - versions "A" and "B" - taken a few days before this one - are much longer.)
This batch of clips is a typical combination of train and train station views, along with a few street musician views (from Shinjuku and Yurakucho) and some exhibition/installation views from the art scene in Ginza.
Entering Nihonbashi Station and (after looking around a little along the way) boarding a Tozai Line train. The station seemed eerily empty when I entered it, but as I walked to the other end of the Tozai Line platform, a lot of people were coming down the stairs from the other end of the station.
"Tokyo-1991-A" January to December 1991 Video Exhibition - held from June 1st to June 4th, 2011, at Y's Art's in Ginza.
Warning: Something happened in the file conversion of the upload process that has left most of the audio wildly out of sync with the video - something like a full ten seconds. It's so bad that I recommend turning the sound off and considering this a silent movie.
